On a conventional aircraft, a lighting malfunction may result in an inspection or maintenance action. On an unmanned military aircraft operating beyond visual line of sight, the consequences can be significantly greater, potentially affecting operational safety or mission completion.

Reliability therefore cannot be treated as an afterthought.
